Beginning on 10/25/09, the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City will be participating in the Pennies for Peace Program. Pennies for Peace is a service-learning program of Central Asia Institute. The program, inspired by Greg Mortensen's quest to build schools for children in the remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, is recounted in the book Three Cups of Tea. Central Asia Institute strives to educate students about the world outside their own experiences, and shows them that they can make a positive impact on a global scale – one penny at a time.
In a nutshell, Pennies for Peace allows school kids and others to collect pennies (and only pennies) to support the building and supporting of schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. So far 100 schools have been funded and 28,000 kids offered a secular education.
