Area Groups Promote Groundbreaking Film on Nuclear Weapons by Producer of An Inconvenient Truth
Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, Peace Action of Michigan, Michigan Stop the Nuclear Bombs Campaign, and Citizens for Peace are working to fill the Main Art Theater in Royal Oak for the opening of Countdown to Zero on the weekend of July 30.
Countdown to Zero traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possess nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (Devil’s Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. Countdown to Zero makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament, an issue more topical than ever with the Obama administration working to revive this goal today. The film was produced by Academy Award® winner and 2009 nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute.
"Countdown to Zero" has the same potential to transform the discussion about nuclear weapons that "An Inconvenient Truth" did for climate change--but only if people see it," says Chuck Warpehoski, Co-Director of the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice (ICPJ). "This film has gotten amazing reviews. The more people we bring out to see this important documentary, the sooner we will move toward a world with zero nuclear weapons."
ICPJ and the other groups promoting the film are focusing their efforts on the 4:30pm and 7:30pm showings on Friday, July 30 and Saturday, July 31.
According to Colleen Mills, President of the Citizens for Peace, "People are very excited about this film. Pastors are taking groups from their churches to the opening. Friends are planning to go to the opening and discuss the movie afterward over dinner. We're working hard to promote the opening of "Countdown to Zero" so that we get people talking about the issue, telling their friends, and taking action to demand a world without nuclear weapons."
